SPANAWAY, WA – Firefighters from Central Pierce Fire & Rescue responded to a reported house fire shortly before 3:00 a.m. on March 9 in the 15600 block of 7th Ave. E. in Spanaway. 911 operators received a hang up call from the residence and sent a Pierce County Sheriff Deputy to the home to investigate. The Deputy arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the home and had the fire department dispatched.
Central Pierce Fire & Rescue units were only blocks away returning from a previous medical aid call. Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and flames from the rear of the home. They quickly gained access into the home and discovered an elderly woman unconscious on the floor. Fire Department Medics began CPR and other life saving measures and the women was transported to a Tacoma area hospital where she is currently listed in critical condition.
Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control within 20 minutes, but not before the blaze did an estimated $200,000 dollars in damage. The woman’s dog died in the fire. There were no other injuries reported. The Pierce County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
