Classes

Our Fire Extinguisher Training is provided free-of-charge to groups (typically 15+ people) who are located within our District boundaries. This program provides hands-on, practical instruction to help individuals and organizations safely and effectively respond to small, early-stage fires. Participants learn how to select the right type of extinguisher, understand fire classifications, and apply the PASS technique (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep) through guided practice. This training emphasizes situational awareness, personal safety, and knowing when to fight a fire versus when to evacuate. Ideal for businesses, schools, and community groups, the program supports workplace safety requirements while building confidence and readiness in real-world situations.

Training Requirements & What to Expect

The training includes both a brief instructional presentation (PowerPoint) and a hands-on component using an indoor fire extinguisher training prop. The presentation portion is approximately 30 minutes, depending on group size and the number of questions. Following the presentation, each participant will have the opportunity to practice using an extinguisher.

To estimate total training time, plan for approximately 5 minutes per participant for the hands-on portion. Most sessions are scheduled for about 1 hour. Our team will provide all training materials and equipment, including the extinguisher prop and presentation. We ask that the host site provide a TV or projector for the presentation, access to power (extension cord if needed), and approximately 15 feet of clear space for the hands-on training area.

To request a fire extinguisher class, the Event Request Form above must be completed at least 30 days in advance. Upon completion and submission, you will hear from us within one week.

Fire Extinguisher Disposal Guidance (Pierce County)

In Pierce County Household Hazardous Waste Program, fire extinguishers are considered household hazardous waste and should not be placed in the trash or recycling. Residents should take unwanted or expired extinguishers to an approved Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) facility for safe disposal.

Ensure the extinguisher is fully discharged prior to transport, and follow the facility’s instructions upon arrival. For businesses or large quantities, contact your local hazardous waste provider for proper disposal options.
