Some fires require more than a traditional fire engine response. They demand specialized training, wildland tactics, and firefighters ready to respond when fire spreads through grass, brush, and timber.

That’s where our Wildland Fire Team comes in.

We have 59 Red Card-certified members, meaning they are qualified to respond to wildland fires both locally and across Washington State. From quick initial attacks on local brush and vegetation fires to deployments under Washington State mobilization plans during major wildfire events, these firefighters help protect communities near and far while bringing valuable experience back to our district.

A few awesome shots from our joint training with the Washington National Guard last week.

⚠️ Reminder: Helicopter training is scheduled again for tomorrow (Thursday, 5/14) between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM near the Lipoma Firs, Sunrise, and Daybreak neighborhoods. You will notice increased helicopter activity as crews train on ground-to-air communication and aerial wildfire suppression coordination.

This important partnership helps prepare responders for wildfire season and strengthens coordinated emergency response capabilities.

Important Safety Note: Do NOT fly drones during training operations or during any wildfire suppression operations. Unauthorized drones pose a serious safety hazard. If a drone is spotted, helicopter operations have to immediately stop.

We’re proud to welcome back Crew 6, our Seasonal Wildland Hand Crew, as this growing partnership with South Pierce Fire and Rescue enters its second year.

Led by a Central Pierce Fire & Rescue Lieutenant, Crew 6 supports wildfire response and mitigation efforts throughout the season. Tomorrow, they head to the Washington State Department of Natural Resources Academy in North Bend, where they will build the skills needed for wildfire suppression and field operations.

After completing the academy, Crew 6 will return to serve our communities through wildfire response, fuel reduction, and mitigation work that helps strengthen preparedness across our region.

Good luck to this year’s Crew 6 team as they prepare for the season ahead.
