Throughout the month of June, members of Central Pierce Fire & Rescue’s Technical Rescue Team are partnering with aviation crews assigned to the 1st Battalion, 168th General Support Aviation Battalion, Washington Army National Guard for a unique and highly specialized training opportunity at the training center located at Station 60.

This training focuses on helicopter hoist rescue operations, allowing both agencies to train together in realistic rescue scenarios that require advanced technical rescue skills and aviation support. Training evolutions include simulated rescues from structures, confined spaces, and steep terrain using a variety of specialized rescue equipment and techniques.

One of the most dynamic aspects of the training involves firefighters being hoisted from the top of the Station 60 training tower and lifted into a Washington National Guard UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter. Technical Rescue Team members are also lowered from the helicopter to simulated victims, practicing the precise coordination required during real-world rescue emergencies.

These exercises provide invaluable experience for both organizations. Central Pierce Fire & Rescue personnel gain hands-on training in helicopter-based rescue operations that may be needed during complex emergencies, while Washington National Guard flight crews strengthen their ability to work alongside local first responders during rescue missions.

This type of training is rarely available and represents a unique opportunity to build skills, strengthen partnerships, and enhance regional emergency response capabilities. By training together in realistic environments, both agencies improve their ability to safely and effectively respond when it matters most.

Central Pierce Fire & Rescue is grateful to the Washington National Guard for their continued partnership and commitment to helping strengthen rescue capabilities throughout our region.
